Farm or vet consultant based in East Gippsland
Herd Solutions is a rapidly growing veterinary clinical and consultancy business based in Eastern Gippsland. We provide animal health and farm management consultancy and run discussion groups, manage on-farm projects, and provide a clinical veterinary service to beef, sheep, and dairy clients. Due to growth, we now need another consultant to join the team. If you have limited consultancy skills, this is not an issue – we will help you develop them

About the role

The successful applicant will participate in the Livestock Consulting Internship. Co-funded by Meat and Livestock Australia, the internship involves undertaking consulting activities to our our fantastic and innovative clients while developing networks across the nation, delivering industry projects and undertaking relevant study. You will also participate in a variety of group activities, including retreats across varying production regions.

During the internship, you will develop the practical skills required in order to provide livestock production advice to producers. You’ll receive two years of mentoring, coaching and personal development, as well as have the opportunity to build valuable industry networks that will be the foundation for a long and rewarding career.

You will independently develop additional herd/flock health and advisory services to sheep and beef producers. We currently have a great opportunity to increase our engagement with sheep producers and will enable you to develop strong links with producers and agricultural service providers in the region

You will assist in managing on-farm demonstrations and develop strategies to improve adoption of project outcomes and other research

A significant part of your role will be organisation, design and delivery of adoption activities such as: workshops, discussion groups, newsletters information videos, engaging articles, webinars, and presentations at conferences and industry meetings

There is some need to travel but generally no more than 2.5 hours from our base

If you are a vet clinical veterinary and reproduction work is also there to vary your day, we work with some great beef, dairy and sheep clients throughout Eastern Gippsland

The after-hours commitment is flexible and generally not imposing​

No dogs, cats or horses – if you are adventurous, you may get to treat a guinea pig or two!

But if you want to keep up your mixed practice skills there is an opportunity to participate in a well-paid after hours roster with a neighbouring practice

About you
-
Above all, you will have an open mind, be adaptable, willing to learn, enquiring, be a team player and have excellent communication skills with a passion for working with sheep and /or cattle producers and an interest in improving clinical and management skills with these species

Interest or skills in agronomy, agricultural economics, ruminant nutrition, farm management or teaching/training will be useful, and if you don't have these skills, we will help you develop them. You'll be working with producers directly, so previous industry experience working within agriculture would be an advantage

Our ideal applicant will have several years' experience in mixed or rural practice working with beef, sheep or dairy and have a degree registrable in Victoria.

A desire to develop a career as a livestock consultant and enthusiasm to be trained in delivering industry programs

A passion for profitable and sustainable agriculture and working with producers to grow and develop their business

An interest in improving clinical and reproductive skills with sheep and /or cattle

Advanced communication, organisational and time management skills
Desirable

A veterinary degree registrable in Vic

Skills in agronomy, social science, agricultural economics, farm management or teaching/training

Previous industry experience working within agriculture and an understanding of the economic and financial basis of beef, sheep or dairy production

Experience in written communication and running workshops/events (preferably in an agricultural context)

Capability in online or web-based communication techniques and social media
